Band Devotions

I was perusing some writings about those common arguments against the Christian faith.  You know, why God allows evil and suffering in the world, belief in miracles, evolution, church history of violence, God's faults.  There are others including that great problem of the only way to God is through Jesus.

Now, these make for great debate and discussion, but all these topics have been dealt with over the years.  There are thousands of books and papers by the world's greatest scholars on these subjects.  In our modern world, we can tune in to great debates and college lectures on our computers.

So why do we work so hard at rejecting God?  Even the children of Israel had signs and miracles performed before their eyes, and immediately were trying to explain them away.

Ravi Zacharias says "A man rejects God neither because of intellectual demands nor because of the scarcity of evidence.  A man rejects God because of a moral resistance that refuses to admit his need for God."

So why don't we want to believe in Christ?

We like our present lifestyle.  He challenges us in areas of morality. He wants commitment.  He wants us to be humble.  He wants us to surrender our will.  Most of all He wants us to die to ourselves.  It's against our nature to like this.

Proverbs 2:3-5  "If you scream for insight and call loudly for understanding, if you pursue it like money and search it out as you would hidden treasure, then the Lord will be awesome to you and you will come into possession of the knowledge of God."

They say a sign of old age is when you reminisce about your childhood.  It's usually the things you got in trouble for that are remembered...the things you did when you were really young and easy to laugh at. You didn't know any better.  I always said that I was not accountable for my actions.

In my case, someone would eventually bring up the perfume incident.  I was ten or eleven years old and acting a little crazy.  Actually it was more excited.  I had the job of passing out the Christmas gifts but really I was more interested in finding some for myself.

I found a gift for my mom and tossed it to her.  Unfortunately, she missed, it hit the floor and broke.  It was a bottle of expensive perfume, expensive for us anyway.  I had broken my mom's special gift from my dad.  Needless to say, my Christmas was spoiled and to this day I get an awful feeling when I think of it.  It was my fault.  I was responsible.

Of course, I was forgiven, and as a family we've had many laughs over it.

This past Good Friday, as I sat in our service seeing pictures of Christ being arrested, tortured, and crucified, I got that same feeling.  Because of my sin, I was responsible for the suffering of another.

In Lee Strobel's book, "A Case for Christ", Dr. Alexander Metherall, MD., PhD, gives a vivid account of the suffering of Christ.  His flogging, torture, and crucifixion were all designed for the purpose of punishment, suffering, and eventually death.  The Roman's had the whole thing down to a science.

We have to take responsibility for it.  I hope every time we think of Christ's crucifixion, we get that feeling of accountability.

Isaiah 53:5 - "But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed."

In the 1950's, a large United States university started to collect the top brand names and follow their progress.  They have continued to do so for over 60 years.

Growing up in the 50's, I can relate to the popularity and familiarity of such names as Coke, Oh Henry, Borden's, Campbell's Soups, and on and on.  IBM was the big name in business machines, Gillette in razor blades.  RCA and Zenith were the biggest names in televisions, and then there were the cars -  Fords, Chevys and Chrysler with the most popular name, "The Caddy'.  These names were seen on television and billboards, and heard on the radio.  There were part of our culture.

By the late 1960's, new names were taking their place - Sony, Toshiba, Honda.  By the turn of the century, many had disappeared.  Yes, Coke, Oreos and Disney remained but many of our favourite cars, TV's, and food products had become extinct.

The movie stars, singers, rock groups from the 60's are unknown to our kids.

So, what's the lesson here?

Matthew 6:19-21 says "Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.  But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.  For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also."  NIV

The Claims of Christ

Many who doubt the existence of God have reassured themselves with the thought, "If God wanted us to believe in Him, He would appear to us."  According to the Bible, that is what God has done.  Writing in the 7th century BC, the prophet Isaiah said that God would give His people a sign.  A virgin would bear a son who would be called "God with us" (Isaiah 7:14; Matthew 1:23).  Isaiah said this Son would be called, "Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace" (Isaiah 9:6).   The prophet also said that this child would die for His people's sins before seeing His life prolonged and honoured by God (Isaiah 53).  According to the New Testament, Jesus claimed to be that Messiah.  Under the oversight of a Roman governor named Pontius Pilate, He was crucified on charges that He claimed to be the king of Israel and that He had represented Himself as being equal with God (John 5:18).

Cast All Your Cares On Him

2/23/2016

Band devotions tonight was based on the bible reading.. 1 Peter 5:7

Here’s what I want to do with care: I want to cast care. 1 Peter 5:7 says to “[cast] all your care upon Him.” You weren’t designed to carry care, you were designed to cast it. And when you try to carry it on your own, you’re in trouble.

I wonder how many of us aren’t really casting our cares on the Lord. I hear so many people say that they’re burdened with cares—finances, the economy, the world, their kids—and that they’ve given them to God many times. But how can you give something to another person so many times unless you’re taking it back each time? I’m not sure we’re actually giving them to God at all. Here’s the danger in that: even if you’re reading the Bible, the cares of this world can choke the Word of God if you keep hanging onto them.

Think about this. Have you ever been in a service trying to worship and hear the Word, but your mind keeps wandering and worrying? You can’t focus because the cares of this world keep rising up inside of you—maybe you had a fight with your spouse on the way to church, you’re having trouble with a friend or you don’t know how you’re going to pay the rent this month. If you want to truly take in the Word of God, you have to cast your cares upon the Lord. He’s the only one who can carry them, and one of the reasons He does is so you can have peace. Are you ready to cast all your cares on Him? He is ready and waiting to take them.

Easter Sunday Thoughts...

5/17/2011

This was the first year that the band didn't have a march around the block by the Church celebrating the resurection of Jesus Christ. The Band has been marching every Easter since I remember. The city now requires we have a permit to march around the block once a year. We have never required to have a permit in the many years that we have been marching. Unbelievable...  We need to pray for our city.

I just want to share with everyone a song that was very special and important to me at a hard time in my life...
"I will cast all my cares upon you, I will lay all of my burdens down at your feet. And anytime I don't know what to do, I will cast all my cares upon you"
